In Europe, after the Great War ended, some new countries were created and others had their former existing borders redrawn (both types coloured green in the above map). During the early 1920s a number lost their independence (for example; the Ukraine, and Byelorussia) and were incorporated into the, then, new USSR. Their sovereignty was only regained during the 1990s
